Democracy Update: Monday 3rd April 2006

• On Friday I mentioned the bizarre disappearance of Belarusian President Lukashenka. Well he should be back amongst us on Saturday - that's the new date for his inauguration ceremony.

• During Saturday's update I spoke about a peaceful protest in Kyrgyzstan. Well the demonstrators appear to have gotten what they wanted. A court in Bishkek has reinstated Rysbek Akmatbaev's candidacy to fill a vacant seat in the national parliament.

• According to the Kyiv Post, Ukrainian President Yushchenko is siding with those parties who have asked for a recount of last Sunday's election ballots. In addition he appears to have offered an olive branch to his former rival Yanukovych...
