Democracy Update: Thursday 30th March 2006
This is how the world's Democracy looks at 16:10 GMT
- Yulia Tymoshenko has promised a business-friendly agenda if she succeeds in forming a ruling coalition, after the Ukrainian election. Ms Tymoshenko claimed she would radically lower corporate tax rates to encourage investment - something that will give comfort to the economically liberal Yushchenko. Incidentally outgoing PM Yekhanurov said a new coalition will be formed within a month of Parliament regrouping. This is all good news for supporters of the Orange Revolution. If Tymoshenko can show Our Ukraine that she is prepared to make some economical concessions, then the chances of Yanukovych joining with the President's party to become PM are increasingly unlikely.
- The Belarusian opposition leader Alexander Milinkevich is in Poland today to report on what's been happening in Minsk. Prosecutors are now claiming he may face charges of public-order violations over the protests he led last week.
- Tajikistan has agreed to allow OSCE monitors to view its Presidential Elections in November. President Imomali Rakhmonov is seeking a third term after a controversial referendum in 2003
- And allAfrica.com asks is Nigerian President Obasanjo Sliding into a Pariah?
That's all from the update for today guys, take care!
